We're beta testing version three now…We're not dead. We're not away. We've been diligently coding, and we can't manage forums and code.In fact, if any of you want or are available to help moderate these forums, I'd be grateful for some assistance. The 'community' certainly hasn't contributed much more than questions and overhead, and some outside assistance in handling that would really be appreciated. Someone that understands and uses HCL that can help answer questions and such would be great..If you can help, message me..Otherwise, I'll be posting a link to the beta area once I get some outside assistance to help manage the forums and support, since I can't bug fix, manage a project and the forums alone..I'm ready to hear from you...

what do you mean by "part hosted" ? is your development moving towards software as a service model? i. e.  hosted by you? Thanks!

Is this thread dead? I too would love to test V3.  Can we at least get a list of features? So many questions, so few answers.  How does one contribute to the development? The FireFox issue with version 3. 0. 6 and newer has me on the verge of changing applications altogether until there is a fix.  If I create a patch is there a way to contribute it? This has a full third of my visitors unable to get assistance.

I would love to be a beta tester.  I installed the current version from cPanel Fantastico and it does not work at all.  Very few actual error messages, but many features do not work.  Sending an email to offline departments does work, but that is about it. I am currently beta testing the new trillian im product and have already found and narrowed down a bug to one particular action.  Would love to help you guys out with your testing too.  Thanks!

Can you give us SVN access to the trunk?  If we're going to be open source, can we be truly open?If you can show us what you're working on we can help you more!  I can't get behind this project unless it's going to be truly open source--Get an SVN or GIT repository(hxxp: code. google. com is easy).  Let the community help you out.  I would be happy to contribute patches or anything to a project that is open. Have a bug management system.  If not for the community, for the developers. "Open source" is more than just letting us peek at the code when you release it.  It's a state of mind, and a production methodology.  You can have more than 2 developers, in fact, you'll get more done with more developers. The project sounds like it has promise.  I'd be interested, but I was a little turned off to an open source project that doesn't have current code available!(other than zipped releases)It seems like you have a community of interested people already, let's not let them down!Private beta is actually called alpha-- a beta release is by definition public. I would also suggest a more open source-friendly license. . .  Copyright != Open SourceBest Wishes!

I agree completely with kekoav.  There SHOULD be an SVN/Git repo, and development would go a lot faster, as there would be many more developers working on it, and many more people to test fixes as time goes on.  However, please correct me if I am misinformed, part of V3 relies on the HCL servers, as it is partially hosted, and partially run on your own server, so this would be a bit of an issue.  This is one of the reasons it is currently in its testing stageThere currently is a bug management system however, which you can find hereAnd another good point about 'Private Beta' == 'Alpha', according to my dictionary, a beta test is:

a trial of machinery, software, or other products, in the final stages of its development, carried out by a party unconnected with its development.

    while an alpha test is:

a trial of machinery, software, or other products carried out by a developer before a product is made available for beta testing.

Hi All, I've been lucky enough to have spent time using a couple of other open source tools in business enviroments (OpenERP, Asterisk) and having installed the current version of helpcenter live I have to say this is a cool project. From reading the forums this really does seem to be a project with a lot of testers, developers, supporters and documenters willing to get involved and I'm really looking forward to getting more involved myself. All that said I am wondering if the following. . .

Quote from: HCL Admin link=topic=775.  msg3595#msg3595 date=1233856237It's a hybrid; part hosted / part run on your server.

. . . means that the project is moving away from full open source to a tiered solution where the opensource option offers some functionality with a 'full featured', paid for option as well?Would it be possible to let the community know if V3 will be a fully open source solution or will it require a form of paid for subscription?CheersStephen

If I understand the plans correctly, it will continue to be free, with part of it running on HCL servers, and the open source end running on your own server. I don't quite understand what part runs where, or why (as I am sure the same could be accomplished while staying fully self-hosted), but I am fairly sure it will continue to be free.I am sure the admins will fill us in as soon as they have time

We've had this project for over a year, almost two if memory serves me right.. in that time we've had no help at all with development. We coded v3 from the ground up. Right now we've stopped testing it, to focus on some other interests. Pretty frustrated overall, there has been little to no 'community' involvement, other than an occasional offer for forum help. We'll continue with v3 when we're done with our other projects, or can hire someone full time to continue our development.

Ever put it on a git repo or whatever and asked for help? There is a difference between releasing code, and putting it somewhere that people can submit patches. Throw it on github and I am sure you would have a hell of a lot of interest in it. And I am definitely willing to help code as much as I can, just give the word!Spenser

Actually? Oh shoot. Well with github, any time you commit something, it would show up on the front page, which may bring a bit more interest. But if you put it in a repo again, I would be glad to help out.Plus, 10% community help is more than the 0% you are getting right now ;) Spenser

I was just looking for this project on github actually.  I would definitely put in some coding time on this project.  I am an ecommerce web developer and have tweaked and modified the different versions for years.  If you put in on github, I would definitely put some good hours in on it.  You have an opportunity right now since many of the paid for services are starting to raise prices and many of my clients are looking for cost saving solutions. Cheers,Dan

Good to hear. I am talking to those in charge about it, and due to the amount of time they have put in (as well as the money that has been spent), they are slightly hesitant to give it all away as open source, but there are plenty of benefits to it. I am sure the community (or what is left of those interested in helping… which seems to be beardbar, BrianP, and myself) and HCL can come to a compromise with a certain amount of freedom of code (open source) yet a large benefit for the parent company as well.Spenser

  • #3994

Well for the most part the users NEVER know what they want. I do web development, and the clients normally need quite a bit of direction :P But technical users normally do ;) And it is good to hear that you also want to help. Not sure how many people HCL Admin is looking for to help, but add him on msn if you are truly interested in helping and working hard on it (its on his profile). Lets see if we can get this rolling!I have svn access right now, so they are definitely open to working with the community if the community does more than create multiple topics a day with "issues" that others have experienced multiple times. If the community takes an active roll it ends up being quite different than if the community is nothing more than many selfish idiots who can't even use a search button.Spenser

:D I have said it a few times in passing, but I am seriously fed up with all of the impatient jerks that come on here, demand to have v3 out, complain about how long it is taking, and then never show up again. There are a couple people that actually come on here and try to help out (and handle the illiterate people), but we are few and far between :( To be honest, I am growing quite impatient with how long it is taking, but I have been helping out here for a few months now, so I at least have an excuse.

I personally liked Help Center Live and was waiting for v3.  I have been away from the software for quite a while, however, so I am getting re-familiar.  I posted my first post ( hxxp: www. helpcenterlive. com/smf/please_welcome_me_to_the_help_center_live_forums-t1100. 0. html ) on the forums, so go easy on me here, with my comments. I must say that I am very disappointed to see that the software is going to be partly dependent on some of the needed functionality residing on HCL's servers.  I have several issues with this. Number one, I am an open source guy.  I like to see all of the code myself, or I don't trust it. Number two, I only use software that I install and personally maintain, on my own servers.  I am very wary of the idea of using software that needs to load something from another site in order to operate.  Something could be introduced that I don't agree with or that might compromise my own site.  Why would I put that much trust in a third party???Third, how can HCL guarantee that their site/server will be up, literally 100% of the time???  Your software, by it's very nature, is used for potential customers or customer support.  If your site/server goes down, this will affect my customers' customers. Fourth, as an open source guy, I like to strip out connections to other sites that I don't like.  I like the software that I put on my sites/servers to be truly separate.  I think this is what I would classify, an issue of privacy.  Why do you think you have a right to know that I am using your software on any given site/server of mine.  You don't have that right.  You are going totally against these principles, for me and for a whole lot of other people. I say this will all kindness.  I am just trying to give you some solid arguments against the path you are on.  And if you do release v3 in the fashion that I have seen discussed here, I will NEVER EVER use your software or recommend it to anyone.  That's a promise!

About 2 hours ago, HelpCenterLive. com was down for about an hour.  This proves my point #3.  You cannot guarantee that your servers or sites will have 100% uptime and yet we all will be depending on your API being available.  You need to abandon this plan and just release the whole thing as true Open Source. . . . The other day, I found a very nice alternative to Help Center Live, on SourceForge. net.  I was very happy to find this alternative, since HCL is going in the wrong direction and I do not approve, along with a whole lot of others that do not approve.  If HCL is going to stay competitive, it needs to be fully Open Source and fully residing on our own sites/servers.

I appear to have missed a post somewhere.  Where did you see this?  I haven't seen anything about new features, requirements, etc.  I have spent quite some time getting HCL 2.1.7 working (see my other posts), so I would hate to move to another system.  But, if I do have to move, I would rather find out now, rather then when 3.0 comes out.....- Brian

Seems I just can't leave :P There was originally some talk that the backend of HCL would be hosted on an external server, and you would run the client interface on your end. Not sure if that is still the plan though.
